چکیده

interesting questions. It took me about six months to realize that philosophy (as interesting as it is) wasn’t going to answer any questions about how to reform education. Psychology seemed like the answer: I reasoned that understanding the mind should help one fi gure out how to change it. The problem then became the paucity of information about the mind. At that stage, psychology was just shaking off its behaviorist perspective (my fi rst publication, when I was an undergrad, was a behavioral study with rats). I didn’t see any alternatives, and stuck with psychology. As it developed many years later, turning to studies of the brain opened up an entirely new way to think about education. I was an early adopter of neuroimaging techniques. Some of our studies focused on the nature of individual differences. In particular, we looked at how variations in regional brain activity predicted variations in behavior. Ultimately, my hope was that we could use such results to validate simple behavioral tests, and that those tests in turn could be used to characterize each person’s ‘processing profi le’. This profi le would indicate what sorts of processing a given person was good at, and what sorts of processing that person was not so good at. And, knowing this, we could fi gure out how best to help that person learn. This interest was a facet of my more general interest in the science of learning, which has deep potential applications in all walks of life. In general, my inclination towards applications has kept me alert to potential ways that basic science can be put into practical contexts, which has proven very useful.

Immunological Identification of Proteinase Inhibitors I and II in Isolated Tomato Leaf Vacuoles.

Proteinase inhibitor I has been identified and quantified in isolated vacuoles from tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) leaves induced to accumulate inhibitors either by wounding or by supplying excised leaves with the wound hormone, proteinase inhibitor-inducing factor. Proteinase inhibitor II was also identified in the vacuoles but not quantified. Control vacuoles were prepared from unwounded pl...

A carboxyl-terminal propeptide is necessary for proper sorting of barley lectin to vacuoles of tobacco.

Barley lectin is synthesized as a preproprotein with a glycosylated carboxyl-terminal propeptide (CTPP) that is removed before or concomitant with deposition of the mature protein in vacuoles. Expression of a cDNA clone encoding barley lectin in transformed tobacco plants results in the correct processing, maturation, and accumulation of active barley lectin in vacuoles [Wilkins, T.A., Bednarek...

Protein dynamics and proteolysis in plant vacuoles.

Plant cells cannot live without their vacuoles. The tissues and organs of a plant contain a wide variety of differentiated and specialized vacuoles -- even a single plant cell can possess two or more types of vacuoles. Vacuolar proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and synthesized in the cytoplasm. Their transport into the vacuolar compartment is under cytoplasmic control. Transcription seems t...

pH in Vacuoles Isolated from Castor Bean Endosperm.

Vacuoles were prepared from germinating castor bean endosperm (Ricinus communis var Hale) and purified by filtration through a cotton layer under physiological osmolarity. The purity of vacuoles prepared by this method was comparable with that prepared by a sucrose step gradient centrifugation reported in a previous paper (Nishimura, Beevers 1978 Plant Physiol 62: 44-48). It was shown by assays...

Bark and Leaf Lectins of Sophora japonica Are Sequestered in Protein-Storage Vacuoles.

The leguminous tree Sophora japonica contains a family of closely related, but distinct, lectins. Different members of this family are independently expressed in seeds, leaves, and bark (CN Hankins, J Kindinger, LM Shannon 1987 Plant Physiol 83: 825-829; 1988 Plant Physiol 86: 67-10). The inter-, and intracellular distribution of the bark and leaf lectins was studied by indirect postembedding i...

Evidence for RNA-Oligonucleotides in Plant Vacuoles Isolated from Cultured Tomato Cells.

We have shown that highly purified vacuoles of suspension-cultured tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) cells contain RNA-oligonucleotides, using two different approaches to label and detect RNA: (a) in vivo labeling of cellular RNA with [5-(3)H]uridine, followed by preparation of vacuoles from protoplasts and by quantification of radioactively labeled material; and (b) in vitro labeling and analys...
